A 'transformational announcement' from UM Hospitals at 3:45 p.m. today

While the Biological Science Research Building holds many fancy events, I haven't seen such pomp and circumstance surrounding one as I did when I was leaving today. See pictures below:

I wonder what sort of 'transformational announcement,' we are talking about. Mr. A. Alfred Taubman, U of M school of Architecture alumnus and philanthropist who has donated large sums to this University among others--his name is on the main wing of the hospital, the medical library and the College of Architecture and Urban Planning--is being honored today. I am gonna go out on a limb here and say it has something to do with a massive donation to the UM health system. I'll let you know more after the announcement at 3:45.

  2. Nevermind:

"They [U-M Board of Regents] also recognized his [Taubman] newest gift to the University, which is being announced today: $56 million to support the Medical School institute that bears his name."

  3. And another building named for him!

AA.com says the money is for stem cell research. Good on him!
