A visit to Blue Tractor and Mash

Yesterday afternoon I had the pleasure of attending a press event at the recently renovated Blue Tractor and Mash. It was really cool to peak behind the scenes at the brewery and see Mash for the first time.

The guys have done a really nice job renovating the basement of Blue Tractor into Mash. There are nice cozy booths and couches where people can chill and sip their whiskey. They've painted the ceiling with blackboard paint so patrons can decorate it with chalk.

Tim Schmidt, Blue Tractor's head brewer, was kind enough to give me a tour of their brewing facilities. I was really amazed by how much they are able to do with such a small facility. I also had a chance to try their seasonal beer, Bad Moon Ryeizen, which is a rye IPA. It was super tasty the bitterness from the rye really completed the beers hoppy character very nicely.

Back up stairs, I met Jennifer and Jessica, a writer and photographer for Awesome Mitten and the other 20-somethings at the press event. We decided it would be irresponsible for us as journalists to not sample Mash's new cocktail menu. I ordered a Southern Belle Bulleit, which as a delicious rye whiskey cocktail. Jennifer and Jessica made fun of me for ordering an effeminate sounding drink in an effeminate glass. I have no regrets though. As for the food, it was all quite tasty. It would be remiss for me not to mention the mini-corn dogs or the sharp cheddar grits. I have to agree with A2GastroBoy about grits, when they are on the menu of a fancy restaurant, they should just start calling them "white polenta."

All in all it was a super fun afternoon and it made me really want to check out Mash again.

  2. ^Same here! When I happened to be there, the register happened to be ringing up happy hour prices even though it wasn't happy hour. I found that delightful.
