Old Ann Arbor

@Dokas just sent in a link to an hour of silent film from 1939 Ann Arbor. From what I've seen, it's a lot like 2011's hit silent movie The Artist. My favorite part in the clip below comes at 4:05. A group of young women appear to be having a newspaper reading party. Without further ado, we proudly present We're in the Movies!:

  3. A quick bit of googling shows the "Detroit Edison Co." was on First north of William (where the apartments are now?) and Yerkes-Sellards was at 209 E. Liberty - near Sam's I guess. Anybody have a notion of what neighborhood the women lived in?

  4. Actually, Detroit Edison was on Main at William, and in fact, DTE still occupies the parcel with a parking lot for their 1980's era building at Main and Packard. The building in the film, which was designed by Albert Kahn, was torn down to make way for the parking lot--and the little panhandling station at the corner.

  5. Main is correct, my aunt lived in the appt house behind on 4th. The ladies tea party was on Davis street between 7th and Edgewood, west of main

  6. Does anyone know more about the Ann Arbo Jaycees connection to this film? Annarbor.com said they were involved somehow. I'm interested as a past President of the A2Jaycees.org
