Ann Arbor's funniest Twitter account: #juliebee

The Current has come out with their 2013 Readers Choice results. Mad props to #juliebee (@juliewbee). What I really want to know is who this #damnannarbor character is.

In all seriousness though, thank you to everyone who voted for us this year for Best Local Blog and Funniest Twitter Account. And to the Current I say this: if you are going to have Twitter categories for your annual Readers Choice poll, you should probably figure out the difference between hashtags (#) and the all important "at sign" (@).

Shigeto at the Neutral Zone

I think our readership is well past their teenage years, but the Neutral Zone is having a little festival tomorrow. I don't recognize names on the lineup except for the headliner, Ghostly International's Shigeto.

Biercamp beer

Biercamp is now selling beer. No word yet on when they will start offering camp. I tried their wheat beer yesterday. It was pretty good--somewhere between an American-style summer wheat ale and a hefeweizen (some banana-clove notes). All in all, a great beer for a hot summer day. Right now, the beer is only for off-premises consumption. It's $12 for a growler or $7 for a quart. The vessels themselves are $5 and $4 respectively, but are reusable. It's always exciting to see more local beer production.

Lonely Man Writes Elaborate Missed Connection

Other potential Craigslist post titles:
  • Hopeless romantic baits soulmate with song lyrics that are mistaken for generic poetry
  • Whole Foods Missed Connection is NOT Organic
  • True Love Found in CCRB Showers
But anyways, the real treat came in this lavish missed connection.
Now, I would normally be behind a missed connection as well thought out as this, but there is the looming title. "Dateable-seeming" is a pretty shitty criteria to start off your missed connection with, you know, because it is a hypothetical missed connection. It really puts all the pressure on the ladies to remain dateable until the weekend, when it is really in high demand. I think the next we will see in this series is "To the marryme-able egg I will pray with next Cinco de Cuatro."

Die Deutschen Kuhknaben

While this Kickstarter has already been funded, I figured that the video is silly enough to send out to the airwaves. And maybe with more funding, they will be able to get real horses.

Ann Arbor UFO sighting?

Found this video while perusing the YouTube. The poster claims it's a UFO they shot on May 25th of this year. Gentle readers, did any of you see this on Saturday? Do you have any alternate explanations of this phenomena?

Snapping turtle

Check out this awesome Vine of a snapping turtle (Chelydra serpentina) covering her eggs. Jen Proctor found the turtle laying eggs on the baseball diamond by her house. Pretty sweet. Good luck little eggs.

Abigail Stauffer album release party tomorrow

Local singer-songwriter, Abigail Stauffer, is having an album release party tomorrow night at the Ark. Doors are at 7:30 and tickets are $15.

Whether the Weather is Terrifying

My tv cut out due to a tornado warning, and shortly the phone call came from the university saying that we should be taking shelter, and avoiding windows. According to amigos, sirens have been heard in some areas of Ann Arbor. Please be careful, even though as I type this the warning has been lifted, weather is a tricky bitch. Within one post, Michigan weather shows how sporadic it is.

Andrew WK

Andrew WK is no longer the cultural ambassador to Bahrain, but I guess that is a good thing because now he can play secret shows at Metal Frat. The frat had reached its capacity by eleven thirty or something, and its members were waiting outside to turn away folks. Which means people who showed up to get punched in a mosh pit were only yelled at on lincoln. Supposedly the show did not disappoint those who were able to make it downstairs.

Morels

Seems like it's been a pretty good year for morels in the Northern Lower Peninsula. Have folks had much luck looking for them in the Ann Arbor area?  I have only been able to find a single morel down state.

Ann Arbor Bloggers in the Observer

The Ann Arbor Observer has become one of my favorite sources for local long format journalism. June's feature is on local bloggers and features Mark Maynard, A2GastroBoy, Ed Vielmetti and yours truly. I would link to it, but it won't be online for several weeks. If you'd like to read it, you'll have to pick the Observer up off your porch.

Mixed Use Party Meeting

For those of you interested, there will be a mixed use party meeting tomorrow at eight pm. They meet at the posting wall in mason hall and then move to a room at 8:10.

Chase the green fairy with Tammy's Tastings

You may have heard Tammy Coxen interviewed on Lester Graham's report on Michigan's distilling industry. Tammy really knows her spirits and will be teaching an absinth-centric cocktail crafting class on June 3rd:
June 3 - Visiting the Green Fairy (7:30 pm at The Last Word)
This most storied of liqueurs has been called both a muse for writers and artists, and a cause of criminality and insanity. Banned for most of the 20th century, absinthe is back. Come learn all about this famous anise liqueur, on its own and in cocktails.
That makes me nostalgic for Leopold Brothers.

Argo F**k Yourself

In all good news, it seems that the rapids course at Argo has opened. That means no more exerting yourself with kayaking in incredibly hot weather, you can pick the sport of champions and tube.

Michigan Craft Distilleries

Earlier this week, Lester Graham, had a great segment on Michigan Radio about our state's emerging craft distilling scene. The piece is definitely worth a listen. Last spring, I met Lester at a Tammy's Tastings event (Serious Tiki Drinks). I assume he must have really enjoined doing the research for his investigation into Michigan's craft cocktail and distilling scenes. I can't help but wonder if this means my dream of sugar beet rum, or brum, isn't too far off. Maybe someone can start working on that.

Similar to Ben's pixel poster post, this was found on church behind TCF. Who is this couple? Should I know them?

Old Fourth Ward stencils

The Old Fourth Ward seems to be a pretty reliable place to find stencils. Seems like someone especially likes painting on street signs.

Literati reflects on their first few weeks

On their website, Literati Bookstore, has a new blog post about their opening weeks. Sounds like things are going pretty well, which really makes me happy. From the blog:
Our opening week, we were planning on doing it very softly. However, the Ann Arbor community was so supportive, as soon as we opened our doors, people were buying books. This is a good thing. Though we have had some hiccups (like running out of receipt paper on Day #1 or thinking we had lost all our sales when really we just weren’t pressing a computer button) so far, so good. We’ve learned a lot so far, both about ourselves, our business, and what Ann Arbor is buying. Thank you to everyone who has had the patience with us as we’ve stammered and stuttered our way through getting our computers up and our special order system (which we are still smoothing out). Here are some other things we’ve learned so far:

-Customers themselves are each others’ salespeople. We were thinking that we would have to do a lot more individual hand-selling to customers than we’ve done. While we get many customers asking for recommendations — which we LOVE — many more people simply browse with a companion and pick up books and say, “Oh have you read this? It’s the best. You have to get it.” And they buy it. That peer-to-peer book interaction, so frequently overheard here, is part of what is lost when you buy online. By far this has been the biggest surprise, just listening to people excitedly talk about books.

-On a similar note, the basement is perfect for couples’ browsing. Many people we’ve noticed just grab a drink at Arbor Brewing or Grizzly Peak or Amadeus, head over to the bookshop, and just wander. Sometimes there are more people in the basement than upstairs, which is something we never expected. We’re planning on putting a few chairs outside so people can just read on the sidewalk. No fuss, no hassle, just a place to sit and read.

Farmer's Market Book Club

This was spotted over the weekend. I haven't done a book club since elementary school but I remember them fondly. Supposedly a majority of people never read another full book again after they leave college. A book club is a good way to guarantee that won't happen to you.

Go! Ice Cream Demo at Mallets Creek

Pretty Sticker Photo from Go!'s Fbook
I am pretty serious about becoming the ice cream correspondent for Damn Arbor. There is little resistance from any other human being on this matter, but I'll cement my title within the next couple weeks. Tonight at the Mallets Creek library, Go! Ice Cream's Rob Hess is holding a summer popsicle demo (as opposed to Winter Popsicles). Actually the information says fruit popsicle. This would be a good opportunity for the community to meet Rob before Go! gets up and biking later this week. The demo starts at seven and more information can be found here.

The reach of SAES' tagging

I noticed this SAES tag in downtown Detroit over the weekend. It's nice to know our taggers are doing outreach in Detroit.

See Paperhaus at Woodruff's on Sunday

DC based Paperhaus will be coming to Ypsilanti on Sunday the 19th to promote their new EP Lo Hi Lo later this month. You should check out their song, Helicopters, above--it has a pretty crazy music video. If you're digging Paperhaus' post-psychedelic pop, you should totally check out their show on Sunday at Woodruff's. Doors are at 8, bands start at 8:30, cover is $5. By the by, Paperhaus is also playing tomorrow night at the Loving Touch in Ferndale if you're reading this on the West Side.

Mitch O'Connell the World's Best Artist

Mitch O'Connell, an awesome artist with Ann Arbor Roots, will be signing his new book, Mitch O'Connell the World's Best Artist, tomorrow night at Vault of Midnight. The event, which runs from 6 - 10 features:

Burlesque
Gallery Show of Mitch O'Connell masterpieces!
Adult Beverages will be offered!
Free gifts!
Streamers!
Multiple Balloons!
Sounds like an awesome time. If you'd like to read a review of Mitch O'Connell the World's Greatest Artist, check out this article on Boing Boing. Mark Frauenfelder has done a much better job than I would ever be able to do. Check this out:
"I'm a great admirer of artist Mitch O'Connell. I'm envious of his work, which pays homage to exactly the kind of garish mid-century populuxe ephemera that triggers a kind of lowbrow Stendhal syndrome in me."
I mean how can I even compete with that? Regardless, you should check out the signing/show/return of the prodigal son tomorrow at Vault of Midnight. I bet you'll have a great time.

#visitypsi Scavenger Hunt

Tomorrow #visitypsi will be hosting an instagram scavenger hunt. Photo taking has long been a part of scavenger hunts, but the vintage fades and blurred borders are a relatively new development. Registration starts at 2:30 and the photo hunt starts promptly at three. Get more information here.

Michigan Sky Music Festival Canceled

Don't go to Zeeb Road tonight or tomorrow, I don't think there will be anything there besides houses or cows or something. I have limited knowledge of Zeeb, but I do know that the Michigan Sky Music Festival has been canceled.

Explore Ann Arbor promotional video from U of M

Check out this new promotional video for Ann Arbor the U of M just published on the YouTube. Strange that it so prominently features Blimpy Burger, right? Also, why aren't those students wearing helmets?

Books and Beer in Detroit

Do you like books? Do you like beer? Then stop by the Old Miami in Midtown tomorrow for Books and Beer. It's from 5:30 to 8:00. Stop by and say hi to us.

English 125: Hipster Accessories

I was tumblring yesterday instead of being an attentive student and found this screenshot under the tag umich. It's from someone who will be attending the university next year and was looking through the LSA course guide. Has 125 always been this divergent? I never took it, something you can probably tell by my writing. Anyways, here is the confirmation that the four credits from this course aren't just ironic, but will help you graduate.

Beers of summer

Looks like the nice weather is here to stay. That means the summer beer drinking season is upon us. It won't be long before the sweltering summer heat necessitate refreshing, palate quenching beers. Here are some summer beers I have been enjoying lately.

Farmhand Ale--Brewery Vivant: This French farmhouse style ale is light and crisp. It's very slightly sour. It was the perfect beer after my ill fated attempt to mow the lawn with a push mower on Tuesday night.

All Day IPA--Founders: this session IPA packs some great floral hops flavor without the bitterness or gravity of some stronger IPAs out there.

Green Thumb IPL--Wolverine State Brewing Co.: If you really want to explore the complex flavors of Humulus lupulus, you might want to check out this session India Pale Lager. I know, it sounds crazy. But lager yeast produce a very clean fermentation which allows more of the hop's favor to stand out in the beer. Think about it.

Well gentle reader, these are three summer beers I have been enjoying. What are you planning to drink this summer?

Spring DIY Fest

The Free Skool rescheduled their Spring DIY Fest a month ago due to really crappy april weather. Sunday is the rescheduled festival, happening now in Ypsilanti at 318 W Cross Street. Skillshares that will be going on include massage, kombucha brewing, seed starting, and macrame, among others. There will also be music, starting around four thirty, by a variety of artists, like Charlie Slick.

Astronaut Chris Hadfield rocking an AAFD t-shirt

Whoa, check it out. It's everyone's favorite singing Canadian Astronaut Chris Hadfield rocking an Ann Arbor Fire Department t-shirt. According to this thread on r/annarbor, one of Chris' friends is in the AAFD and they trade t-shirts. Pretty sweet.

Hate has never looked so much like fireflies before. These images are showing hate tweets from Michigan. The website that this is coming from, Geography of Hate, allows for different filtering by loaded words. The Traverse City area is really making a push towards virtual hatred through their twitter feeds. Ann Arbor is doing pretty well in keeping any possible hate off the internet.

Brinery POP IN at Zingerman's

Local fermenting king, The Brinery, is hosting a POP IN dinner at Zingerman's Events (on fourth street) this Thursday evening. On the menu is Kim Chi Stew, Pierogies with coyote kraut, Chicken Fried Rabbit, and Apple Cider Vinegar Pie. The event runs from 5 pm- 9:30 pm.

Deduce that Missed Connection

Ben is getting really busy or something, so that means I will be trying to pick up the pace. That might lead to some divergent posts. I read this missed connection earlier and it interested me. It's a generic missed connection but then he puts lifestyle into quotes and the whole game changes. What kind of lifestyle can be so out of Ann Arbor's groove that it is presented that way? Nudist, breathatarian, mole person? Is there a house somewhere on the old west side that is covered in pistachio shells and yesterday's newspapers? Deduce this missed connection.

Highest Paid Public Employees

I pulled this info graphic from deadspin, but its most places on the intermet

I do know a couple of names from the basketball scene, mostly due to our March Madness success, but the name of the coach is not one of them. I also don't feel like googling it. Michigan is one of forty states that has a sportsball coach on top. I guess because most sportsballs are highly lucrative. The most divergent state is Nevada. Med School Plastic Surgeon seems pretty open to interpretation. I envision someone who gets paid to make med students faces more symmetrical.

Michigan Sky Music Festival

This weekend the first Michigan Sky Music Festival will be held in Dexter. The music starts Friday night and continues till early sunday morning. Camping comes with a weekend pass. The poster above has some familiar names like bluegrass band Dragon Wagon or street busker Violin Monster. They are still looking for volunteers, and you could probably inquire on their Facebook page about that.

Sonic Lunch lineup announced

The 2013 Sonic Lunch program was announced on Friday! June's concerts will feature Martha Reeves & The Vandellas; Darren Criss with Theo Katzman; Family of the Year; and Dale Earnhardt Jr. Jr.

Check out the full lineup on the Sonic Lunch website.

Barn Swallow Concerts

I got an email from Appleseed Collective's Katie Lee last night. She has an Indiegogo campaign going for a really cool project. Basically, she will be hosting a summer concert series at her house. There will be tones of cool bands coming. Even better, all the money from the concerts will go to benefit non-profits. Barn Swallow Concerts sounds pretty awesome. You can find out more on Barn Swallow's Facebook and Indiegogo pages.

Tonight's Bang! is space-themed. Hope to see you there!

Color Run in Ypsilanti

The Color Run East Michigan took place in Ypsi this morning! 15,000 people lined up along Cross St. between Riverside and Frog Island parks for the start. (For reference, Ypsilanti's population is about 19,500!) The weather was a little cool, but we warmed up after running the first mile or so.

That's a lot of people.
(Looking east along Cross St.)

It was a lot of fun; I can't imagine a better start to the weekend! And in a couple days, I should be able to wash all this colored powder out of my hair.

Runners and spectators gathered in Riverside Park after the run for music, and an amazing amount of color was in the air:

Bird Bone

When I first saw this tag I thought it said "Bird Drone."

The Milk Carton Kids 4/29

On Monday, April 29th, I had the opportunity to see The Milk Carton Kids play at the Ark. I was hesitant at first because I had never heard of them before, but let me tell you, I was SO glad I went. For those of you who haven’t heard of them, The Milk Carton Kids are Kenneth Pattengale & Joey Ryan, a duo whose musical sensibility and even physical appearance is reminiscent of a bygone era. The pair came onstage looking very dapper in matching black suits and proceeded to croon their hushed, harmony-filled tunes with grace and ease. The simple, poetic lyrics evoked Simon & Garfunkel, while the fingerpicked guitar and folk-bluegrass style recalled Gillian Welch or the Punch Brothers.

As if their music wasn’t enough, Kenneth and Joey also provided hilariously sarcastic commentary between songs, such as the intro to “Charlie,” a heart-wrenching song written by Kenneth to his baby daughter Charlie, who “doesn’t yet have a due date…or a mother.” They played some songs from their most recent album (released in March), The Ash and Clay, in addition to some oldies from their 2011 release. Their performance of "Michigan" was especially touching with its hauntingly beautiful lyrics. Another favorite was "Memoirs of An Owned Dog," in which Kenneth sings from the point of view of a (dead) dog in a Dylan-esque voice. They seemed very comfortable with the venue and expressed a great interest in returning a few times a year. The discerning folk fans in Ann Arbor would do well to be on the lookout.

Aoife O'Donovan, a country belle from Boston, was the opener, and she played a fantastic set in addition to providing sweet vocals for a couple of The Milk Carton Kids’ songs.

All of their albums are available to download for free on their website. You should definitely give The Milk Carton Kids a listen - they are really something else!

28 years of annual Landsat pictures of Ann Arbor

Google has just released a new web based GIS App, Earth Engine. It let's you play around with a lot of environmental data including Landsat images, NDVI. If you click here, you can see a timelapse of annual Landsat pictures of Ann Arbor from 1984-2012. The biggest thing I notice is the rapid growth of northwest Pittsfield Township starting with the Meijer on Ann Arbor Saline.

Ice Cream Pop Up Shop

I think that eventually all my posts for Damn Arbor will be ice cream related. It won't be hard to do in the summer months. For the next two days there will be an ice cream pop-up shop at Sweet Heather Anne's on north main street. The lactose filled treats will be supplied by Hello! Ice Cream. There will be gelato jewels, macaron sandwiches and many more sweets.

Friday the shop will be open from ten to six. Saturday it will be open from nine to two. Check out the specifics here.

More prototype cars

Does anyone know why they put those weird patterns on the prototype cars? Is it so that when they are in a pack, the lions have trouble hunting them?

Division/Huron Play Place

I understand that there are disagreements about what to do with the old Papa John's property. I'd like to throw this play structure into the ring of possibilities. It is cost effective and would provide hours of entertainment for the Kerrytown area.

Hello! Ice Cream

Another ice cream venture is starting in the Washtenaw area, contrasting Go! Ice Cream in Ypsilanti. Hello! Ice Cream, employing exclamation in the title as well, is serving the Ann Arbor crowd via beautiful ice cream truck and cart. This cart will eventually be seen at the Farmer's Market, serving italian style cream, or gelato. I personally don't see these new businesses being in too much competition, but ice cream wars have been known to happen.

Sonic Lunch launch party Friday

Summer in Ann Arbor is incomplete without Sonic Lunch's free Thursday concerts at Liberty Plaza, and this year's concert series kicks off in just under a month.

This Friday, Sonic Lunch is having a "Sonic Launch party" to announce this summer's lineup. The party's at 9am at What Crepe? on Liberty. 107.1's morning host, Martin Bandyke, will be there, and the party will feature "specials, prizes and more." I'll try to stop by on my way to work and check it out.

Right now, just the first two Sonic Lunch concerts have been announced. Martha Reeves and the Vandellas will play June 6, and on June 10 at Michigan Theater they'll have Glee star and Wolverine  Darren Criss plus local indie rocker Theo Katzman.

I know FoolMoon and FestiFools are long over. Still, this little video is pretty cool.

Mortarboard comics

Recent Umich grad, Quinn (no last name listed on tumblr), drew this awesome cartoon on top of her mortarboard during last Saturday's graduation ceremony. Pretty freaking awesome. I really like the little wolverine rolling around on its back in the bottom right corner. Congrats class of 2013.

Teenage Octopus: What?

I saw this poster downtown. Pretty interesting.

In bloom: Juneberries

The juneberries (Amelanchier sp.), are blooming! These shrubs/small trees are members of the rose family. Their flowers have 5 thin white petals and in about a month will turn into delicious fruit.

Ann Arbor on NBC

I don't know about y'all but I didn't know that Michelle Chamuel, of My Dear Disco/Ella Riot, was on the Voice. She is working with Usher and that seems much better than working with child bully, Adam Levine. The internet says that Usher/Non-Usher Humans love her and she has a good chance at owning this singing competition. I am not entirely sure how the show works, or why it is three nights long, but voting is probably by phoning in. People in Ann Arbor should do that, it's a lot easier than making a trip down to the Blind Pig to see a My Dear Disco show.

Breaking news: trouble at the Magic Shop

Damn Arbor has just received the following anonymous tip:
Two police officers just approached [REDACTED]'s "Magic Shop", one around front and one around back. [Redacted] was led out the back of the building uncuffed and taken away in a squad car. Not sure why.
[Redacted] recently opened up a Magic Shop in [REDACTED]. It is possible that this arrest might be for an outstanding warrant in Florida. More on this story as it develops. Remember, you can always send us your hot tips. We truly appreciate it. You can see a screen shot of the Collier County, FL Sheriff's page after the jump.

The Mountaintop at Performance Network

"[Malcom X] was 39. I'm 39."

The Mountaintop opens with a motel room's dimly lit interior, cars' headlights passing along the rainy street outside. We hear the last two minutes of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.'s "I've Been to the Mountaintop" speech – the last of his career – and after he concludes, "mine eyes have seen the glory of the coming of the Lord," a wet and tired King (Brian Marable) arrives at the motel.

This is room 306 of the Lorraine Motel in Memphis, Tennessee. It is April 3, 1968 – the last night of King's life.

Brian Marable as Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

King had long known he was in danger; he acknowledged it in the speech he gave that night, but vowed to carry on: "I'm not worried about anything. I'm not fearing any man!" The Mountaintop, by Katori Hall, is an imagined story of King's last night on Earth; one during which King examines his life, his successes and failures, and his unfinished dreams and incomplete plans.

The play reminds us clearly that King was, after all, a man – a courageous and righteous man, but one as susceptible as any to fear, illness, and ultimately death. The hundred minutes (no intermission) are filled by conversation between King and Camae (Carollette Phillips), a maid who brings coffee to the motel room. The play is an insight into King's life, mortality, and dreams; it gives the audience a powerfully compelling lesson on his determination and our own duty to continue carrying his message of love, equality, and peace.

The production was excellent – the play received a standing ovation at the Sunday matinee I attended, and I don't believe any of the audience could begin to discuss the show until we were in the afternoon sunlight outside the theatre. It isn't all serious, though; there's usually a lighthearted moment just around the corner to give the audience (and, of course, Dr. King) respite from the intensely raw and surreal circumstances which develop onstage.

Brian Marable as Dr. Martin Luther King Jr; Carollette as Camae

The Mountaintop is a new play by American playwright Katori Hall. It opened in London in 2009 and on Broadway in 2011, and in 2010 won the Olivier Award for best new play. I loved Performance Network's production, and I'd highly recommend that you don't miss it. (The London production garnered critical acclaim; the New York Times didn't particularly like the Broadway production.)
