Dam Arbor: Barton Nature Area

Barton Nature Area has always been one of my favorite city parks. It is especially lovely in the wintertime when the pond is frozen and the spray from the dam freezes to the fronts the spillways. I stopped by there this afternoon. I know what you are all wondering: yes, the Barton Pond is frozen enough to walk on.

Ice formations on a spillway.

Looking across Barton Pond at the hydroelectric plant. The plant is active and generates 4.2 kWH of electricity a year.

From the foot bridge looking towards the dam.

More frozen spillways.

According to ArborWiki, Barton Dam is "extremely photogenic."

  1. a great place to fish but getting too bogged down with people. Making it into a great nature area when finished......
