Medical Marijuana

Benjamin Michael Solis is a writer for The Washtenaw Voice. He has just started a series exploring the application of the Medical Marijuana Act from the perspective of a patient. Check out his first installment:

"So what are your qualifying medical conditions?” asked a doctor for MedGrow, a medical marijuana education facility that also serves as a caregiver operation.

“I’m not sure,” I tell him, handing over my health records. “I have high blood pressure and a bad heart, will that work?”

“No. You already take medication for it.”

“What about my ADD?” I ask again.

“Only if there’s an H in it,” he says. “Anything else?”

Now I’m getting a little frustrated. And then I remember….

“I had a stroke when I was 6 years old?”

“That’s more like it!” my doctor said. And with that final question —along with a much lighter wallet — I am officially eligible to smoke marijuana legally in the state of Michigan.
