The DDA really did send me to Portland about 6 years ago. I went with a group of other DDA board members, staff, and city council members to a conference about downtowns. We learned all about Portland's hipness and came back to Ann Arbor talking about streetcars, trains, public art, and bikes. Several years after that trip, the DDA and City Council decided to build a giant parking structure.
