Mama's movin' out: Ann Arbor News/MLive/The Com/Whatever moves to 111 North Ashley

Lotsa changes for the journalists in Ann Arbor with The Com going the way of the dinosaur and MLive and The Ann Arbor News doing... whatever it is that they're doing. Now it appears that they're leaving the 301 East Liberty Street location they've been in ever since The Ann Arbor News originally bit it. They're moving into the 111 North Ashley building, which is that seemingly stranded condo complex a block up Huron from the Relaxation Station.

My guess would be that this is rent-related, since Herb David left and Seva will be leaving that block for that reason exactly. Whatever the reason, I'm not sure how I'll give directions in that area now that it's no longer "the AnnArbor.com building."

P.S. I'm fully aware that those aren't the actual lyrics to "Rose's Turn," but that's what I thought they were until today and I can't not put up that gif of Buster.

The new Ann Arbor News, two weeks in

The Com has been dead for nearly two weeks now. I never thought I'd say it, but I do miss the old rag just a little. Seems like the biggest change with the switch to the Ann Arbor News has been a sharp drop in the number of comments on articles. Sure, a good portion of the comments on the Com were problematic. So from one point of view, this could be seen as a benefit to switching platforms. On the other hand, much of the strength of online publications comes from the online communities that grow around them. Even if the Com's community could be overly negative and tended towards hating students and cyclists, the website did manage to create a sense of place. The Ann Arbor News section of MLive.com feels a little empty in comparison.

New political blog

Ann Arbor has a new political blog just in time for election season. Middle of the Left is an anonymous blog by "a local Ann Arborite who enjoys following politics. The fact that they reference the long dead Arbor Blahg makes me think they have been following that local blogosphere for sometime now. Here's the description of Middle of the Left:

This blog will concentrate on political topics for our local Ann Arbor area and occasionally for state and federal issues. The main purpose of the blog is for people to have a place to go to read the truth. It will correct any misinformation that is purposely propagated by others so that readers can know the full story. I will supply references whenever possible to back up specific points that I make in my posts.

There will be no comments allowed on the blog posts. I find that the comments take away from the main point of the article and do not add anything to the discussion (most of the time). Maybe I will change that in the future, but for now the comments will be closed.

Currently, there is a lot of ridiculousness that is being passed off as policy making at our city council meetings. For those of us that pay attention to these things, it is incomprehensible how this happens week after week. This blog hopefully will show the elected officials exactly how their ideas appear to the public.

I have some misgivings about anonymous political blogs. That said, I can understand the urge to make your voice heard if you feel like it's often overlooked in the public discourse. So far, Middle of the Left seems to have focused mainly on calling out the "teapublicans" on Ann Arbor's city council. At the very least, this could make city politics a little more interesting.

Oktoberfest at ABC this weekend

ABC's annual Oktoberfest Block Party is tonight and tomorrow. Do you like beer and polka? If you do (and why wouldn't you?) you should totally check it out. If you're lucky, you can see Matt and Renee wearing lederhosen and dirndl, respectively. And if you come on Saturday night, gentle reader, I'll even save a dance for you.

Above Ground Hair Studio closing - not moving

I'm not even kidding. While getting my bangs trimmed yesterday, I found out that Above Ground Hair Studio is not, in fact, moving into the space where the Pink Pump used to be on Liberty. Instead, they're closing, with all the employees scattering about.

Turns out the HVAC system in their new space didn't meet the standards required for a hair salon. Things aren't going down until the end of October, but still - curly-haired folks, get thee to Cookie ASAP, or call and find out where your favorite stylists are heading.

It's a sad day for curly hair, y'all.

I saw this awesome bike rack the other month in Kalamazoo. At first I though it was supposed to be a dog, but now I think it's a dinosaur.

U of M launching free shuttle to Detroit

The University Record is reporting that U of M's Detroit Center will begin a free shuttle service between Ann Arbor and various stops in Detroit. So far, the tentative schedule only has service on Friday and Saturday. On the bright side, there is Saturday service to Eastern Market. It's pretty great to see expanding transit options for travel between Ann Arbor and Detroit. So long 6:16 Amtrak 352 Wolverine with continuing service to Dearborn, Detroit, Royal Oak, Birmingham, and Pontiac.

Miley Cyrus steals GVSU's famous pendulum sculpture

Grand Valley State University's Allendale Campus was home to a famous pendulum sculpture. That is until Miley Cyrus dropped the music video for her new song, Wrecking Ball. This has prompted Lakers to start riding their pendulum naked, in a fashion emulating Ms. Cyrus:

Beer Beat: Christmas already?

I was shocked to see that the Ypsilanti Food Co-op was already stocking winter seasonal beers. Technically, it's not even autumn yet. Maybe it's the cool weather we've been having, or maybe I'm just a sucker for rich malty beers with a hint of spice. Whatever the reason, I ended up going for a 4-pack of Four Elf. It's a pretty darn good--thick, and malty with notes of nutmeg, clove, and allspice. At around 9% ABV, this beer will warm you up on a chilly night. If you're not a fan of full bodied beers, or abide by the Reinheitsgebot, this beer may not be your favorite. That said, I think Dark Horse really hit the ball out of the park with Four Elf.

We're in the Columbia Journalism Review

Anna Clark, has an interesting article out in the Columbia Journalism Review looking at the state of local reporting in Ann Arbor in light of the shuttering of AnnArbor.com. What’s next in Ann Arbor?, does a great job putting the whole Ann Arbor News to AnnArbor.com back to AnnArbor.News Ann Arbor News, into perspective both locally and as it reflects a national trend of reorganizing newspapers to "better focus on online content." Least we forget, Advance Publications has been touting the virtues of the "Michigan Model" as it rolls back print papers in other cities.

The article interviews several Ann Arborites and asks them where they get their news now. The gist is this: it's too bad the main news source in town is continuing to decline in quality. Nevertheless, we're quite fortunate to have other resources like The Ann Arbor Chronicle, The Michigan Daily, @vielmetti and ArborWiki, and @juliewbee, to name a few of the people who are contributing to local journalism. Damn Arbor even get's a mention by the Daily's online news editor, Austen Hufford:

...there are also a number of small independent news sites to fill in the gaps: Everything from the Ann Arbor Chronicle for city government coverage to Damn Arbor for its funny commentary.

Russian Festival this Weekend

St. Vladimir's Russian Orthodox Church is hosting their annual Russian Festival this weekend. With borsch, a bounce house, and vodka infusion competition, it's hard to see how you could go wrong at the Russian Festival. In all seriousness, the festival looks pretty cool and has stuff to offer everyone: puppet shows, folk dancing, Russian Food. I assume it'll all be pretty legit. Nina Davuluri is Miss America 2014

Former U of M student, and my old chem lab partner, Nina Davuluri was crowned Miss America 2014 tonight. I didn't watch the pageant but supposedly she performed a killer Bollywood dance. Her platform is based on cultural diversity, and she is the first Indian-American Miss America. Life seems much better for her now than when we were struggling to finish lab pages.

Rhymefest to Speak at Rackham

Chicago based hip-hop artist, Rhymefest, will be speaking at Rackham on Wednesday September 8th. From the Facebook Event Page:

“Bars Against Bars: Hip Hop For Change” will address the relationship between Hip Hop culture and the prison industrial complex. Hip Hop often takes the blame for many societal ills, but Hip Hop is not the problem. It is a symptom of much larger injustices. Rhymefest will call attention to these issues and highlight ways to affect change.

Should be pretty cool.

Old Michigan Map

Check out this super old map of Michigan. It's taken from A New Map of North AMERICA According to the Newest Observations by Herman Moll from 1741. I like that Lake Superior is just called "Upper Lake." This map curiously leaves out the Great Michigan Plateau, a prominent feature found in some maps of the region that were made in the early 1800s.

MFarmers Market opens today

The MFarmers Market is open today from 11 am to 3 pm in the Michigan Union Courtyard. I think it's great that the Campus Farm is working with the MFarmers Market to bring good produce even closer to campus.

Nerd Nite tomorrow

Nerd Nite is back. If you check it out tomorrow night at Live, you can expect to see presentations on home brewing, the origin of writing, and video games. Not quite knife making and poop transplants, like July's Nerd Nite. But still, it sounds pretty interesting. Doors are at 6:30; cover is $5.

Copper plated bike

While at Dally in the Alley on Saturday, this copper plated bike caught my attention. It's a special edition of the Detroit Bicycle Company's Madison Street. On one hand, it looks pretty hard to ride with that huge cog in the front. On the other, it's a really sexy looking bike.

ESPN Lizzy Seeberg Sign

ESPN's GameDay isn't something I care about. Football could actually be filed under my apathy list. I only pay attention so I know to avoid driving (all my rage comes out in traffic). However, the reaction to this screenshot is interesting. Lizzy Seeberg is not a friend or relative of some Michigan fan. Her story is tied in with Notre Dame's history. Three years ago she was raped by a Notre Dame footballer and three years ago she committed suicide following her rape.

At first the public believed that this Michigan fan was taunting her but, in a letter posted on Deadspin, it seems that he is aiming for vindication. Lizzy Seeberg was threatened post assault by another member of the team and the investigation into her assault was not started until after her death. This injustice is what brings the author to write:

Which, after all of that, brings me to the topic of the day - that HI LIZZY SEEBERG sign on College Gameday. In short, it was done to show that she isn't forgotten, and that people do know and care about her story. Even if her school refuses to acknowledge it, there are some people out there who do.

Much of what else he writes past this point seems to be toting the great morality of Michigan and our Football. I see great hypocrisy in this, and think that without recognizing our faults, we can't grow past rape culture any more than Notre Dame can. Administrators at George Washington University are moving in the right direction by recognizing statistics  and implementing sexual assault education for athletes. Something similar, like an expansion of SAPAC, would be a good use of Ross's recently donated money.

Lite Bike this Sunday

I'm pretty excited for Lite Bike, the Critical Mass-lite* bike ride that's coming up on the evening of Sunday the 15th. The event begins at ABC at 7pm. From there, riders will make a short loop of the city, and return to a Beer Garden that will magically appear in front of ABC.

*pardon the pun, but I couldn't resist.

What's to become of AnnArbor.com?

With AnnArbor.com's impending assimilation into MLive.com, it looks like like a very valuable domain name might be up for sale soon. Does anybody have the skinny on if it's going to be for sale? Maybe we should start a kickstarter or something to raise money for it.

Mixed Use Mass Meeting Tonight

Tonight at seven, the Mixed Use Party will have a mass meeting at the Dana building. At seven ten the party will be moving into a classroom on the first floor of the building.

Free kiwi plant

Gentle readers, did you know you can grow kiwis in Michigan? I didn't. Anyway, someone in Pittsfield Township is trying to get rid of their kiwi plants via Craigslist:

Mature LARGE KIWI VINE & smaller vine to Pollinate with. These produce smaller type kiwis with edible skin in MI . They need a lot of sun and are taking up too much space in my garden. I didn't know you needed another to pollinate the female till 2 summers ago. This is the first year it got blossoms to produce fruit but didn't have enough sun to grow.
This is a good time to transplant. You must come and dig them out. Photo of the root area on the large female.

Kerrytown BookFest this Sunday

Gentle Readers, are you as excited about the Kerrytown BookFest as I am? EJ and I went for the first time last year and it was super awesome. Not only did we get to meet THE Bonnie Jo Campbell, but we also got to see her moderate an awesome panel discussion with other women authors. They will be reprising the same panel this year:

...by popular demand the panel “Cherchez la Femme” will feature writers Bonnie Jo Campbell, (“Once Upon a River”); Natalie Bakopoulos (“The Green Shore”); and poets Susan Ramsey (“A Mind Like This”) and Lolita Hernandez (“Quiet Battles”) discussing the women’s point of view in writing.

There will also be panel discussions on Detroit Music, the auto industry and Detroit's rise and fall. It should be a great time. Hopefully we will see you there this Sunday.

One man's take on the historic Ross gift to U of M

Oh HamNo, why are you so angry? That said, I have never really been under the impression that the Ross School or the Athletic Department have been want for cash. I mean, it's definitely nice that Stephen M. Ross donated the $200 million to Michigan. Still, wouldn't it be nice to see the same amount of money going to fund scholarships for under-represented students, lower tuition, or even just to the endowment?

If you're looking for something to do in the greater Ypsi-Arbor area this evening perhaps you'll consider checking out The Saturday Giant at Woodruff's. Hot off his first Daytrotter session, The Saturday Giant is touring from Columbus, but we wont hold that against him. Doors are at 9, music starts at 10 and cover is $5. Other acts include, Tauk, Live Antics, and the Howling Loud.

The Ann Arbor News is back

Turritopsis nutricula, the immortal jellyfish, is unique among animals in that it can revert back to its clonal polyp stage after becoming sexually mature. In a similar process, The Com announced today that it would be reverting back to its previous state as the Ann Arbor News and reintegrating the MLive Media Group as part of MLive.com. It should be be noted The Com exists as a subsidiary of MLive.

The Com emerged in 2009 [ed: for those of you who enjoyed the jellyfish metaphor above, The Com, could be considered analogous to the T. nutricula's medusa, or sexually mature, phase] from the closure of The Ann Arbor News. To me, it always seemed stupid to switch from the Ann Arbor News to AnnArbor.com; the name of a newspaper with a 174 year print run has to have some intrinsic value. Also, the idea of a print edition of a website has always seemed, well dumb. So I'm glad to see the Ann Arbor News name coming back. That said, over the past four years, AnnArbor.com has also developed some value. And it appears as if the new AnnArbor.news Ann Arbor News [ed: polyp stage] will be dropping the site, AnnArbor.com, as it fully integrated with MLive.com. Personally, it seems a little short sighted to get rid of the AnnArbor.com domain. Why not just have AnnArbor.com contain the Ann Arbor News' content using MLive.com's servers and formatting?

The upswing of all this is that you will no longer be forced to watch in horror as unordered print editions of a website continue to pile up in your lawn. Yeah, I'm looking at you @trevorstaples. Instead, you can watch in delight as unordered newspapers pile up in your lawn. Newspapers, they are so olde timey and quaint--such a throwback to 2009.

UPDATE--12:00PM:

On The Com's Letter to Readers, lots of folks were posting comments that 1) predicted an impending downsizing of local reporting staff, 2) wishing the local reporters good luck and praising their accomplishments and 3) complaining that MLive.com looks terrible. These all seem to be valid points that add to the depth of the story. Unfortunately, commenting was disabled and the comments have now been lost to the aether. I guess MLive didn't want people saying bad things about it. Seems like they should have probably anticipated some negative comments. Deleting comments en masse that adhere to commenting guidelines seems pretty tacky.

Mutants on the Diag

The Diag was the scene of a pro-mutant protest in the latest issue of Uncanny X-Men (#10). You can read a summary of the issue here, incase your're not up to date on the Marvel Universe. It's nice to know that even in fictional worlds, the U of M is still a hotbed of liberal politics.

Lost Kite in Northwest Ann Arbor

This is not a delta kite. It is however, in the public domain. 

Has anyone in Water Hill found a lost kite? Found this on r/AnnArbor:

I lost my 6' delta kite. It's slightly sun faded orange, yellow, green, blue and purple with rainbow tails. It's possibly in a tree somewhere. I was at Forsythe school off of Newport Rd. on the NW side of town. When I had about 1500 ft of string out, the line snapped. Wind is blowing SE at 10-15 mph. I don't know how far it could've gone before it landed, but it would've passed over the Water Hill neighborhood, possibly going as far as Kerrytown, downtown or campus. I've had the kite for 10+ years and it flies well. I'm curious if someone finds it, and where, and if they'll get it back to me. My contact info is on the tag, or PM me.

Interview with Jim and Paul Manganello: 'String Up the Moon'

Fratellanza's new show, "String Up the Moon," previews this Thursday at the PuppetART Theater in Detroit. Fratellanza members and Michigan natives Jim and Paul Manganello, who wrote and perform this piece, agreed talk to Damn Arbor about this show, clowning, Russians, and femininity.

Tickets for "String Up the Moon" are still available at the PuppetART Theater from September 5-8; at Michigan Legacy Art Park on September 14; at the Jam Handy at the Detroit Design Festival September 20 and 21, with a special performance with a Russian tea afterparty September 21.

DAMN ARBOR: Welcome back to Michigan! We’re excited to see you guys back in action together and performing at so many venues around the state. First things first: we want to know what you’ve been up to since we last saw you in The Mute Quire with The New Theater Project last summer. You were both off to adventures abroad, if we remember correctly. What have you been working on?

JIM MANGANELLO: I've been at a theater school called Lassaad in Brussels. But I think of it more as a samurai studio. Our teacher, Lassaâd Saïdi, gives us impossible problems and we try to solve them theatrically. We nearly always fail.

DA: Jim, can you give us an example of a problem you would be asked to solve theatrically? We can’t even begin to imagine what that would look like.

JM: We’re asked to be a lot of things that don’t have legs and arms. Natural things, musical things.

DA: We'll have to see an example in person. Another great reason see the show! Paul, what have you been up to?

PAUL MANGANELLO: I was in Switzerland all year at Scuola Teatro Dimitri. The school comes from a circus tradition, so I was doing acrobatics, mime, and theater projects with classmates from around the globe.

DA: What are you going to take away from your study overseas? Any moments that stand out in your mind?
 

Violin Monster Autumn Ale

Arbor Brewing Company's new fall seasonal, Violin Monster Autumn Ale, is being released this evening. It's a strong, spiced, dark wheat beer fermented with a hefeweizen yeast. You can read more about the ABC/Violin Monster collaboration and the upcoming short documentary about the beer on Eclectablog Though I can hardly believe it's time for autumn ales already, I am excited to try this beer. What can I say, I'm a sucker for fall seasonals.

Lost Cat

A couple weeks ago I lost my cat and was super sad. She came back but Ben gave me permission to post about it. Now Ben is on vacation and I was gonna do a segment called "A cat a day while Ben is away." Here is a follow up to the shot savannah cat in Detroit.
