Mark your calendar: Presidential primaries and county-wide ballot proposal on Tuesday, March 8

There's an election next Tuesday, March 8! Here's what you need to know.

• City polling places will be open from 7am until 8pm on March 8.
• Find your polling place at the Michigan Voter Information Center. (You can also verify you're properly registered and view sample ballots there.)
• As we previously reported, February 8 was the last day to register in Ann Arbor and be eligible to vote in this election. If you're not registered, you should register to be sure you'll be ready next time.
• The city clerk has information on absentee ballots, accessible voting, and voting ID requirements. (The city clerk's office Saturday hours for absent voter ballots will be March 5, 2016, 8am - 2pm.)

In addition to voting for presidential primary candidates, there's a countywide proposal on the ballot on renewing a .20-mill levy to fund our county's enhanced emergency communications system.

We at Damn Arbor believe this renewal is prudent and will allow our county's emergency operations center to continue keeping citizens safe and informed during severe weather and other emergencies; and we encourage readers to vote YES on this proposal.

PROPOSITION TO AUTHORIZE THE RENEWAL OF THE EXISTING LEVY OF .20 MILLS TO PROVIDE FUNDING TO CONTINUE TO OPERATE AND IMPROVE THE COUNTY ENHANCED EMERGENCY COMMUNICATIONS SYSTEM BY POTENTIALLY CONSTRUCTING ADDITIONAL TOWERS, UPGRADING THE EXISTING INFRASTRUCTURE AND PURCHASING THE NECESSARY EQUIPMENT.

As a renewal of the existing extra millage, shall the limitation on the amount of taxes which may be imposed each year for all purposes on real and tangible personal property in Washtenaw County, Michigan continue to be increased as provided in Section 6, Article IX of the Michigan Constitution and the Board of Commissioners of the County be authorized to levy a tax not to exceed one fifth of one mill ($0.20 per $1,000 of state taxable valuation) for a period of ten (10) years, beginning with the December 1, 2016 tax levy, (which will generate estimate revenues of $2,920,963 in the first year) to continue to acquire, renovate, maintain, upgrade and operate the County’s Enhanced Emergency Communications System, potentially including constructing additional towers, upgrading the existing infrastructure, purchasing equipment, and paying for maintenance and user fees?
