Trumpeter swans making a comeback

Trumpeter Swans Having Fun! from Joe Liba on Vimeo.

I've been seeing a lot more of the native trumpeter swan this fall and fewer of the invasive mute swans. Nice to see the native population making a comeback. The easiest way to tell the two swan species apart is that the mute swans have a large orange or yellow section on their bills, while the trumpeter swans have just back bills. Also, the trumpeter swans honk while in flight.

  1. Those trumpeter swams sure do know how to have a good time!

  2. Great to hear! I was paddling out at Gallup last week, trying to get one more in before the season was over, and only saw mutes (though I did see a surprisingly large number of coots, a kingfisher, and what I'm pretty sure was a young black-crowned heron). Not only are they invasives, they're also dicks about it, so it's great to hear that trumpeters (which I have yet to see, sadly) are en route.
